Maneki Sushi Union City is a straightforward Japanese restaurant nestled on Alvarado Blvd that serves up a wide variety of sushi and comforting Asian dishes. The spot has a modest, no-frills dining room that tends to fill up during lunch and dinner rushes, so visiting off-peak—like mid-afternoon—can offer a more relaxed experience. The restaurant is clean and tends to have a calm vibe, making it a convenient stop whether you’re grabbing a quick solo lunch or dining with friends.

The menu leans heavily into sushi rolls, with a broad selection that includes staples like the California Roll and Dragon Roll as well as more unique options like the Spicy Tuna Crunch and the Orange Blossom. Beyond sushi, the dinner menu features hearty donburi bowls — Chicken Teriyaki Don, Beef Teriyaki Don, Bulgogi Don — as well as comforting udon and sukiyaki dishes, which add warmth and variety especially on cooler days. For lighter fare, bites like takoyaki and sunomono provide small, flavorful side options.

Service here is generally responsive, though the team can be stretched thin during busy times. Parking can be tricky, especially evenings and weekends, so planning to arrive a bit early might save some hassle. The kitchen tends to move orders along quickly, which locals appreciate when dropping in for a fast sushi fix or a casual meal.

This place suits diners who enjoy a casual, unpretentious atmosphere and a broad menu that delivers both traditional sushi and comforting Japanese-style rice bowls and noodle dishes. It’s particularly well-suited for midday or mid-afternoon visits, avoiding the typically busier lunch and dinner spans. The balance of solid sushi options and warm, filling entrees make it a good choice for a quick bite after work or a relaxed weekend lunch with friends who want a well-rounded Japanese meal without the polish of higher-end spots.

2nd time coming here. Pros: Open even from 3pm to 6pm, so it's nice to be able to get Japanese sushi anytime. Restaurant is clean. We went around 4pm and there were a few other tables of customers. Food came quickly. Server was friendly and tentative. Food was very good. Cons: Very hard to find a parking space. Some of the dishes were over filled with onions, and the tempura was a bit oily. Atmosphere was a bit dark. Overall, very good place to get sushi 3rd time here, end of summer 2018, and I would say their score dropped a bit to 3.5 stars. Hopefully, they can change things around. This time we went, it was for dinner. There were about 5 tables as it was still early. My boys love tonkatsu and teriyaki, while my daughter loves sushi. The tonkatsu was a little oily. It should have drained about 30 seconds more. The teriyaki was really sweet, but my son said the beef was tender and tasty. My daughter usually gets the Cherry Blossom. Taste was still good and the tuna smelled and tasted fresh, but you can tell the sushi chef was a novice. Pieces were not cut evenly; roll was not wrapped tight (fell apart when using chopsticks); outer layer of tuna was not consistent - thick at some parts and thin at others; and the inner ingredients seem haphazardly cut - no uniformity. Sushi is an art form.

Service was great. There was one lady working there unfortunately but she was very nice and quick considering she was alone. Food was good, I didn't get sushi but i got the Bulgogi it was a little sweeter than I'm use to but overall good experience would be going back

I got take out here. They have a very large section of rolls and sushi here. I got the Flying Ninja and the Dragon rolls. Both said they were spicy but I didn’t taste much spice even after I dipped it in my soy sauce and wasabi mix. Overall both rolls were good with tempura shrimp inside. Like I’ve said there is so many options I’d like onto and try different ones.

Lil sushi spot in Union City. They have a decent selections and good prices. I was there in the late afternoon but it gets busy at peak times. The food is consistently delicious and quick.

Whenever I have a sushi craving I'd come here during my lunch hours. Food is delish and the portions are pretty good too. They do get packed occasionally so do come off hours or early prior to lunch rush.
